This module is aimed at staff working with children and young and people in Torbay.

The aim of this learning is to ensure you know the various types of abuse and neglect inflicted upon children and to explain what you must do if you suspect a child is being abused or neglected,

Module 1

This module will introduce you to The Child's Journey to support you in making assessment decisions when thinking about what level of need or vulnerability the child is currently experiencing.

On completion of this module you will be able to:

  • Discuss the four specific types of abuse and the signs and symptoms of possible abuse.
  • As appropriate role, able to refer to social care if a safeguarding/ child protection concern is identified (aware of how to refer even if role does not encompass referrals)

Module 2

On completion of this module you will be able to:

  • Clear about own and colleagues' roles and responsibilities, and professional boundaries, including professional abuse and raising concerns about conduct of colleagues.
  • As appropriate role, able to refer to social care if a safeguarding/ child protection concern is identified (aware of how to refer even if role does not encompasss referrals)
  • Documents safeguarding/ child protection concerns in order to be able to inform the relevant staff and agencies as necessary, maintains appropriate record keeping, and differentiates between fact and opinion.
  • Shares appropriate and relevant information with other terms.

Module 3

On completion of this module you will be able to:

  • Know what to do next if you suspect possible abuse and what action will be taken, this includes a child being a vicitim of trafficking, sexual exploitation, at risk of FGM or at risk of exploitation by radicalisers.
  • Act as an effective advocate for the child or young person.
  • Recognises the potential impact of a parent's/carer's physical and mental health on the well-being of a child or young person, including possible speech, language and communication needs.
  • Clear about own and colleagues' roles and responsibilities, and professional boundaries, including professional abuse and raising concerns about conduct of colleagues.
  • As appropriate role, able to refer to social care if a safeguarding/ child protection concern is identified (aware of how to refer even if role does not encompasss referrals)
  •  Acts in accordance with key statutory and non-statutory guidance and legislation including the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child and the Human Rights Act.

Module 4

On completion of this module you will be able to:

  • Clear about own and colleagues' roles and responsibilities, and professional boundaries, including professional abuse and raising concerns about conduct of colleagues.
  • As appropriate role, able to refer to social care if a safeguarding/ child protection concern is identified (aware of how to refer even if role does not encompasss referrals)
  • Document safeguarding/child protection concerns in order to be able to inform the relevant staff and agencies as necessary, maintains appropriate record keeping, and differentiates between fact and opinion.
  • Share appropriate and relevant information with other teams.
  • Acts in accordance with key statutory and non-statutory guidance and legislation including the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child and the Human Rights Act.

Many new areas have come into this learning including FGM, trafficking and radicalisation.  It is important to remember that with changes at Government and policy making level you need to ensure you keep your knowledge up to date.  Your learning from these modules should include discussions about safeguarding practice within your supervision.
